Orang- orang Islam di Mekah sentiasa sahaja disakiti oleh orang-orang Quraisy ,mereka tidak mahu agama Islam berkembang di Mekah. Orang Mekah yang memeluk agama Islam akan dihukum dengan berat. Mereka dijemur ditengah panas yang terik tanpa diberi minuman dan batu besar di letakkan di dada mereka. Salah seoang penetang kuat agama Islam ketika itu ialah Umar Al-khatab . Umurnya dalam lingkungan 30-35 tahun. Tubuhnya sasa dan gagah serta mempunyai pengaruh yang kuat kepada kaum Quraisy . Cita-cita utamanya ialah hendak menghapus Nabi Muhammad. Jika Nabi Muhammad dapat dibunuhnya baharulah pekembangan agama Islam akan terhenti. Oleh itu beliau telah mencari Nabi Muhammad dengan pedang terhunus.


Sewaktu Umar mencari Nabi Muhammad, datanglah khabar kepadanya bahawa adiknya sendiri Fatimah binti Al -khatab telah memeluk agama Islam bersama suaminya. Berita ini telah menambahkan lagi kemarahannya. Beliau membatalkan hasratnya hendak membunuh Nabi Muhammad ,beliau terus menuju ke rumah adik kandungnya itu. Dia mahu adiknya meninggalkan agama Islam.

Apabila sampai ke rumah adiknya ,dia terdengar suara orang membaca Al-Quran. Umar terus memarahi adiknya dan memukul dengan hulu pedangnya . Akibatnya Fatimah mendapat luka di dahinya. Dengan perasaan marah sangat, Umar meminta Fatimah dan suaminya memberikan apa yang dibacanya. Kedua -dua suami isteri ini enggan. Mereka takut ayat suci itu akan dikoyak oleh Umar. Umar bertambah marah lalu mengheret kedua -duanya daripada hamparan yang mereka duduki. Dari hamparan itu terhulurkan secebis ayat suci Al-Quran. Umar terus mengambilnya dan terus membacanya. Serta merta lututnya lemah dan terus rebah. Hatinya bertukar mejadi belas dan kasihan kepada adiknya. Dia meminta Fatimah dan suaminya membawanya kepada Nabi Muhammad. Di hadapan Nabi Muhammad ,Umar menyatakan keislamannyadan beriman kepada Allah.

Sejak hari itulah Umar telah menjadi pengadang Nabi dan menjaga keselamatan Nabi Muhammad di samping Hamzah. Umarlah yang mencadangkan kepada Nabi Muhammad supaya berterang-terangan menyeru orang Mekah supaya memeluk agama Islam dan beribadat di sisi Ka'abah.
